Psoriasis
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by patches of red, inflamed skin covered with thick, silvery scales. It occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells, causing them to build up on the surface faster than normal. These patches, or “plaques,” often appear on areas like the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, though psoriasis can affect any part of the body. It’s not contagious, but it can be uncomfortable and impact quality of life. Psoriasis symptoms can range from mild to severe, with flare-ups influenced by various factors, including stress, infections, and certain medications. Our dermatology team specializes in personalized treatment plans to help manage and relieve psoriasis symptoms.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes rapid skin cell turnover, resulting in red, scaly patches on the skin. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, research shows that psoriasis is linked to immune system dysfunction and genetic factors. For many, psoriasis can be triggered or worsened by environmental factors, such as stress, certain medications, skin injuries, and infections. Family history also plays a significant role, as individuals with close relatives who have psoriasis are more likely to develop it. Our dermatology experts can help you understand your unique triggers and develop a treatment plan to manage your symptoms effectively.
Common treatments
Though psoriasis is not contagious, it is unpredictable. You may heal without warning only to have it return just as quickly or years later. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for psoriasis, but our dermatologists have the knowledge and experience necessary to help you manage your symptoms. Our psoriasis treatment options include topical medications, Vitamin D (steroids or retinol creams/gels), oral treatments, biologic treatments (retinoid pills, chemotherapy medicine), light therapy, and UV-B light (controlled doses of sunlight).
