Finally, a non-surgical treatment for submental fullness (also known as “double chin”). Submental fullness occurs as a result of genetics, aging and weight gain. This is a very common problem that 68% of men and women have. It can affect their confidence and self-esteem. Until now, liposuction was the only solution for this problem.
Dr. Klein is one of the first physicians in Orange County, as well as the U.S., to use Kybella, and one of the few physicians to be selected to train other physicians in this breakthrough technology.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a prescription medicine used to improve moderate to severe fat below the chin. Its active ingredient, Deoxycholic Acid, breaks down fat cells permanently. Deoxycholic acid also occurs naturally in our bodies.
Who is a good candidate for Kybella?
Adults with firm skin and fat below their chin that can be pinched with their fingers are typically good candidates. As this product will not help saggy skin, patients with very lax skin may not be good candidates.
Do I need a consult before Kybella?
Not every person who desires treatment is a good candidate. We recommend a quick consult prior to your treatment to ensure you will achieve success with Kybella.
A Nationally Recognized Leader
Dr. Lorrie Klein’s rare combination of technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility puts her at the forefront of dermatologists nationwide. Dr. Klein’s reputation for providing natural-looking results is why she’s the choice of women and men from throughout Orange County, Southern California and beyond.
What happens during Kybella treatment?
Your neck and chin area may be marked and then lidocaine, a local anesthetic, will be injected to ensure comfort during the procedure. A template will then be applied and Kybella will then be injected into the fat layer below the skin. You will be in the treatment room for 10-20 minutes but the injection part of the procedure takes only about 5 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, most patients require 2-4 treatments, spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Occasionally, patients with a larger amount of submental fat will need 5 or more treatments.
Are Kybella results permanent?
Yes, but weight gain or skin becoming more lax with age might cause double chins to recur.
What are alternative treatments for submental fullness?
Liposuction is the only alternative treatment.
Will I need other treatments as well to make my chin and neck look their best?
Lax, saggy skin or jowls can be improved with Ultherapy and fillers, such as Juvederm and Voluma. Botox helps prominent vertical neck bands (platysmal bands). Sometimes these bands look more prominent after Kybella treatments; this is due to “unmasking” of these bands when the fat is no longer hiding them.
What are the potential side effects of Kybella?
The majority of patients have swelling and/or bruising for several days to a week. Many have redness and firmness. Tenderness and numbness may occur. These side effects tend to lessen on subsequent treatments. Rare side effects include: difficulty swallowing during the first few days (this is thought to be due to swelling), temporary numbness, nerve damage causing an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, hyperpigmentation, and small areas of beard loss in men.
How should I prepare for Kybella treatment?
To reduce the risk of bruising and swelling avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), Vit. E, fish oil and similar meds for 1-2 weeks before your treatment. Arnica Montana, starting the morning of your treatment or immediately after, will also help reduce bruising and swelling. A physician-strength version is available for purchase at our office.
Men should shave their neck and under their chin the morning of their treatment.
Take 800 mg of Ibuprofen 1 hour before your treatment (take with food.)
What do I need to do after my treatment?
No special care is needed afterwards. Women can wear a scarf if they wish to hide swelling or bruising. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours may reduce swelling.
Jowls: We use a total of only ½ – 1 vial per treatment, usually 2 treatments are performed, 2 months apart.
This makes a great add-on treatment to any filler appointment, no consult or extra time needed!
